| Yuri Gagarin, Cosmonaut
#1 in a mankind history, had his historical flight
on April 12, 1961. Generally speaking, Yuri Gagarin had many ties with the city of Saratov, Russia. He studied here at an Industrual College in late '40s, early '50s. He joined here an amateur aeroclub and made his first flight on a training plane. After all, his spacecraft, Vostok-1, 1st manned spacecraft landed 40km SE from Saratov, on the left bank of the Volga river, near Smelovka village, right on a tillage. |
Now that place is turned into a memorial with a monument to Yuri Gagarin, lots of planted trees and flowers around and every year on April, 12, a special festival is held there with lots of public from Saratov, Engels and other cities, special competitions among marathon runners, motorbike racers, truck racers, paratroopers, RC plane modellists, etc. In addition, radio amateurs install there their tents and antennas to commemorate that event with the special activities. Saratovskaya Oblast Amateur Radio Club first time operated from the landing place in 1979. The callsign was UK4CAA/p. |
